The Australian Patents Act, 1990 (the "Act") was amended with effect from April 1, 2002 to provide for an absolute novelty requirement, the effect of which is similar to the novelty requirements of the European Patent Convention.
Charles joined FB Rice in 1999, having practised as a patent lawyer in South Africa for a number of years. He registered as an Australian Patent Attorney and a New Zealand Patent Attorney in 2001 and became a partner of the firm in 2002.
 
Charles has been in practice for over 25 years and has experience in a diverse range of technology fields including mining equipment, packaging, mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, printers, medical devices and business methods.
 
Since joining FB Rice, Charles has acted for a number of Australian medical device companies covering a wide range of medical technologies.

Charles has extensive experience in handling multi-jurisdictional patent portfolios for clients. He focuses on achieving commercially relevant outcomes in the most cost effective manner.
 
In particular, Charles has a great deal of experience in the preparation, filing and prosecution of US applications and has been involved in interviewing US patent examiners on behalf of clients, preparing appeal briefs and related matters.
