The Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia recently decided that a claim for gathering evidence relevant to an assessment of an individual’s competency did not constitute patentable subject matter (Commissioner of Patents v RPL Central Pty Ltd [2015] FCAFC 177).

Ronelle has a strong background in electronics, computer networks, communication systems, mine automation and domestic appliances. Her experience spans drafting, infringement and patentability opinions and the prosecution of applications in Australia, the United States, Europe, China and South America. Additionally, Ronelle’s work has included IP audits and valuations, developing and implementing IP strategies including scoping and planning IP protection, freedom to operate searches and advice, and advising on possible infringement and design options.

Prior to joining FB Rice, Ronelle worked as in-house IP Council at a large international appliance manufacturer. This gives her a deep understanding of some of the challenges faced by clients when managing their international patent portfolios.

Ronelle makes it a priority to thoroughly understand her clients’ portfolios no matter how niche the technology area and to provide commercially strategic advice. She is well known for her conscientious and personable approach to her work.

Previously, Ronelle has worked as a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales and the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Ronelle is a qualified Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney.

"Before joining FB Rice my peers had told me that the people and culture made for a good work environment, and I’d been advised that the firm was respected and that the Sydney engineering partner, Charles Berman, had a good reputation. Since starting, I’ve found all this to be true. In addition, I was pleased to discover that the culture encourages a focus on people more than a focus on billing, while still delivering a top quality product. This human focus seems to extend beyond the relationships amongst colleagues internally, strengthening the partnerships we have with many of our clients."
