Working at FB Rice

Our people join FB Rice for two key reasons.

People

Our people are the reason for FB Rice’s success, so it really matters to us that this is reflected in our everyday working lives.  Our teams come from diverse backgrounds and cultures which means that every solution we create for a client benefits from diversity of approach.

We recruit the best people and empower them to make their own decisions, creating a respectful workplace where people are treated fairly and are highly motivated to succeed.  We recruit well rounded people who appreciate our nurturing culture.

At FB Rice your potential is limited only by your talents and ambitions.  Our people make a difference to some of Australia and the globe’s leading researchers and innovators because of their talent and effort.

We also appreciate that throughout careers everybody encounters unanticipated circumstances and exciting opportunities.  Sometimes, these circumstances mean that we need to take time out of work.  Wherever possible, FB Rice provides the flexibility for our people to work in the way that suits individuals best.

Whether somebody needs to be away from the office for an extended period, part-time, or just for a few hours during the day, we respect their needs.  We work with them to help balance their personal and professional commitments.  One thing that truly sets us apart, is that we judge performance based on what our people accomplish rather than the time spent in the office.

FB Rice offers paid parental leave on a sliding scale rising to 13 weeks after five years with the firm.  This leave is available to the primary care giver regardless of gender.

Work

When you join FB Rice you have the opportunity to contribute to projects which are interesting, stimulating and leave a positive legacy.

We have an enviable reputation for excellence and when you devote your talent to the firm, you will work with inspiring people, both clients and colleagues.

Many of our people have the opportunity to travel and exchange ideas and work with people from different cultures and backgrounds.  As well as contributing within Australia, we strive also to make a contribution to the international professional community. Our Partners and Attorneys represent the firm and Australia overseas in professional bodies including Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI), Association of Patent Law Firms (APLF) and Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) seeking to support a fairer and more robust system of intellectual property protection.

At FB Rice we support our Attorneys in further study to develop their professional skills.  We fully support our Attorneys' desires to further their knowledge and expertise, and do this through further study, secondments and exchanges.  Click here to read more about a secondee’s experience.

The firm has recently introduced a mentoring program, designed to pass on the experience and expertise of our more senior attorneys to our trainee and junior attorneys. The great benefit of this to our clients is a faster and more thorough training process for our attorneys, as they benefit not only from hands on experience, but from the accumulated experience of our senior Attorneys.

John Landells
Partner

"What drew me to FB Rice was the close collegial team environment and it being highly regarded as the best life sciences practice in Australia. This was endorsed by various patent attorneys throughout my professional network who were incredibly complimentary about the working environment, people and FB Rice firm as a whole.

"A key strength about FB Rice is the people and our ability to collaborate so effectively between and within offices and technology groups to produce highly effective multidisciplinary teams capable of excelling in complex technology areas. Our attorneys really do view themselves as part of their client’s business teams committed to providing strategic and commercially focused IP advice as their trusted advisors both domestically and internationally."
