Abrey completed her PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology at The University of Queensland and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research for 7 years prior to joining the patent attorney profession at FB Rice. She has extensive experience in a broad range of scientific disciplines that include molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
Her PhD was carried at The QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute investigating the pathophysiology of neurodegeneration with a focus on the de-regulation of DNA repair, RNA processing and transcription mechanisms. In her academic career, Abrey specialized in investigating the pathological mechanisms of several neurodegenerative disorders with a major focus on Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T), a rare multisystem disease for which there is no cure. During this time, she obtained a Fellowship from the Children’s Hospital Foundation for her work which then led to the application of a synthetic, odd-chain triglyceride as a novel treatment strategy for A-T. This pilot study led to funding by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australia to advance as a Phase 2A/B clinical trial.
As a medical researcher, Abrey has also worked on a variety of occupational diseases, infectious diseases and has built a strong track record of publications, awards and grant funding for her work over the years. Abrey is passionate about health, well-being and precision medicine and looking forward to apply her knowledge and experience to help clients and stakeholders achieve successful outcomes towards the development of novel applications in biotechnology and biotherapeutics.
