Steve provides an extensive range of intellectual property services for clients, ranging from contentious matters including patent oppositions and litigation support in Australia and internationally; to advising on due diligence, infringement and freedom to operate matters; and devising patent prosecution strategies from drafting through to global patent portfolio management. Of particular note is Steve’s involvement in contentious proceedings before the Australian Patent Office, the Federal Court of Australia and the European Patent Office, in which he has achieved notable successes.
A defining feature of Steve’s practice is his particularly personable nature. Steve contends that by taking the time to get to know how clients prefer to work, a stronger, more constructive outcome is invariably achieved. He has a range of clients including large multinational corporations, publicly listed biotechnology companies, universities, spin-outs, research institutes, SMEs and individual inventors, and adapts his practice to the particular needs of each.
Steve also has significant in-house experience, having established secondment arrangements between his team and both an ASX-listed biotechnology company and a leading Australian medical research institute for many years. Steve and his team actively manage these clients’ patent portfolios and provide advice on IP matters ranging from the patentability of new research, portfolio strategies, investor-ready due diligence, freedom to operate and disputes.
Steve regularly presents on case law and general intellectual property issues and is known for his ability to express complex science and technology clearly to audiences at a wide range of knowledge levels.
A Senior Fellow of University of Melbourne Law School, Steve also actively contributes to the training of junior attorneys.
Steve is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney.
