Thomas Ware

Tom has experience building and managing patent portfolios across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Europe, Asia and other key jurisdictions. His technical experience includes antibody therapeutics, antibody-drug conjugates and radiolabelled antibodies; CAR-T and other engineered cell therapies; therapeutic proteins and biologics; nucleic acid therapeutics; gene therapy and gene editing; vaccines and infectious diseases; diagnostics; drug delivery technologies; and genetically modified and transgenic animal products.

He also advises on patent opportunities arising from clinical development, including new formulations, dosing regimens and therapeutic uses. He considers how these and other individual inventions fit within a broader patent portfolio and contribute to longer-term market protection.

Tom enjoys becoming involved early in the development of new technologies and understanding where the science and product are heading. He works with clients to identify patent opportunities as new experimental data emerge and shapes filing strategies around publications, clinical development, investment and partnering. This allows patent strategy to develop alongside the technology and its commercial objectives.

Before entering the patent profession, Tom conducted research in cancer biology and gene therapy. He completed a PhD in signal transduction and cancer biology at The University of Melbourne and later worked for a biopharmaceutical start-up developing next-generation gene therapies and medical diagnostics. His research and industry experience give him first-hand insight into how experimental programmes evolve and the practical decisions involved in translating research towards commercial products.
