Australia’s Innovation Patent System is currently under review and is threatened with abolition. An IP Australia Economic Research paper, which issued in 2015, somewhat surprisingly suggested that the Innovation Patent System in Australia was not effectively stimulating innovation among Australian SMEs.

Jeremy is a Partner of FB Rice and heads the Registered Designs team.  After six years with the firm, he joined the FB Rice partnership in Sydney.  Before joining FB Rice, Jeremy worked as a London-based UK patent agent and a European patent attorney for nearly a decade.

Jeremy is well known amongst clients for his approachable, honest, pragmatic and commercial approach to their intellectual property portfolios with the goal to help them achieve the best business outcomes available. He looks at the bigger picture and determines what the long term goal of the client is regarding their IP, reviews all pros and cons of available options. He puts things in a way that are easy to understand, particularly for clients with little IP experience.

Jeremy specialises in patents and designs in the mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering fields. His expertise extends to inventions in the areas of mining equipment, oil and gas services, domestic electrical appliances, transport and logistics, and laboratory equipment.

Jeremy also has considerable experience in patenting inventions relating to green technologies including greening buildings and storm water management.

As well as preparing, filing and prosecuting patent applications, he has also run numerous oppositions to patents for inventions before the Australian and New Zealand Patent Offices. Jeremy has provided expert evidence on issues of infringement and/or validity of Australian patents in proceedings before the Federal Court of Australia on several occasions.

Jeremy is currently the President of the Institute of Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys, travels regularly to Europe, the UK, Austria, and France, where he has an extensive global network of contacts.
